New Rules For Mixed Martial Arts

While Mixed Martial Arts (or MMA) may seem a bit chaotic, there are in fact some rules to the sport. The rules in modern times have changed quite a bit from what they previously were. Weight classes is one of the main rules in this sport. Time limits are another new concept that has become a part of MMA in modern times. Certain maneuvers are usually banned. There are several ways that a fight can end, too.

MMA comes from a long history of competitive fighting. While the rules were originally quite minimalistic, it has been clear that certain changes were necessary over time. The main reason that the changes were implemented were to not only protect the fighters, but to make MMA a recognized as an actual sport, rather than simply barbaric fighting.

One of the new rules implemented is that of weight classes. This is due to the fact that differences in weight were becoming a huge factor as more and more fighters began to participate in the sport. There are currently nine different weight classes.

The introduction of time limits is another relatively new rule in MMA, made for several reasons, including making the fights more easily viewable on television, and making it so the fighters do not draw out fights for a long time by nobody taking a dominant position. Most fights have a five minute time limit, this makes it easier for the sport to be compatible for a few reasons.

In MMA, there are certain moves that are not allowed. Just about anything with the hands, and feet is allowed, and some states even allow knee and elbow strikes. Banned moves include gouging of for the eyes, pulling of the hair, strikes to the groin and bending of the fingers.

The fights can end in a few different ways. The time can run out, and the match be decided by judges. Other ways to end a fight include the referee or fight doctor stopping it, one corner throwing in the towel, or a knockout or submission.
